Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Facilities Maintenance & Operations, the Facilities Lead Electrician is a journey-level skilled trade worker responsible for full range of skilled electrical work including installation, maintenance, modification and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems. Additionally, the incumbent prioritizes, coordinates and leads the work of a small work group or crew and maintains computerized maintenance management systems, including accounting for labor, materials and purchasing, as well as preparing reports. On specific projects, work may involve coordinating with other departments and coordinating the work of other skilled crafts workers. Position makes decisions based upon sound operating and maintenance practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspects, isolates, troubleshoots and repairs electrical malfunctions using various test instruments; operates electrical power-generating plants and other electrical equipment and systems. Maintains and repairs low voltage systems including fire, alarm and access systems; tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency. Plans the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations; fabricates electrical parts; and performs incidental welding as necessary to complete electrical work. Advises in the selection and storage of electrical equipment; and inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations. Inspects related work performed by contractors; Performs work on campus for electrical projects providing estimates of cost, time and materials. Ensures that all work completed is in accordance with established safety procedures; maintains a safe and clean work environment. Acts as point person for completion of all electrical preventative maintenance schedules and provides thorough reports on assessment and condition of assets. Cleans, maintains and services tools and equipment used in the performance of duties. Addresses service requests for electrical outages in individual rooms, building areas or buildings. Troubleshoots, locates, diagnoses and repairs equipment malfunctions. Performs major overhauls involving disassembly, inspection and re-assembly of all parts, or directs others in performance of same. Ensures equipment is tested for proper functioning.
- Provides lead work direction to other journey level electricians to complete assigned work orders and perform preventive maintenance schedules assigned via computerized maintenance system . Lead work direction includes prioritizing and coordinating the work of a small work group or crew and providing direction for work sequencing and technical expertise and leadership, and ensuring necessary materials, supplies and equipment are available. Instructs staff on work and safety rules and ensures that they are observed; inspects work to ensure it meets quality requirements and specifications; establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
- Coordinates work flow for jobs and preventative maintenance. Maintains, retrieves and creates records or schedules for buildings and pieces of equipment, including work performed and future work required. Reviews and makes changes in computerized systems to the frequency of required preventive maintenance based on equipment condition and available resources. Maintains logs of maintenance and repair records and retrieves data related to work performed. Prepares standard reports of maintenance activity, labor and parts consumed.
- Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality of services. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow. Informs supervisor of project status and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational goals. Prepares and submits progress and other reports, as required or requested.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

- Reads, interprets and works from drawings and specifications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems; applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California. Working knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques.
Ability to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses; operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position; lead, instruct and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers; accurately estimate costs, supplies and materials needed for jobs; prepare lists of materials; ensure work is performed in sequence; maintain records; and prepare more complex reports.
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program. Additional one to two years of experience as a journey-level electrician that included work coordination responsibilities.
Possession of a valid California Electrician's Certificate, or other certification of Journey level experience. Specific knowledge of Johnson Controls, Simplex Fire, Genetec/HDI access and security systems. Experience with work management database software, such as Limble. Previous experience in an educational or academic setting. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services. Ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of technical operations of the job. Able to solve a problem in a collaborative team environment.

Required to work indoors and outdoors in University buildings and grounds year-round, including inclement weather. Includes working in the presence of loud noise, vibration, dark and/or enclosed spaces, moving mechanical parts, automobile exhaust, dust, chemical and paint fumes. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials and involves risk of being exposed to fire and electrical shock.
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.

Position required full range of motion, and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate sized equipment up to 10 to 50 pounds (moving up to 100 pounds is required rarely). Position requires bending, climbing, reaching, moving heavy objects and equipment, and applying force. Requires use of a video display terminal. Standard vision requirements with/without corrective aides: Close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral; Depth Perception; Ability to adjust focus. Requires travel between campus offices and to off-campus locations.
