PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Disability Resources (SDR) and day-to-day consultation with the Student Disability Resources Advising team, the Student Disability Resources Advisor is responsible for planning, development, delivery and evaluation of comprehensive, integrated disability support services and accommodations for eligible students. Performs complex and sensitive work with and on behalf of students with learning, physical, psychiatric/psychological, intellectual disabilities, and/or brain injuries, including people in crisis and those seeking assessment. Performs as a member of the Health and Wellness Services team and as part of the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Disability Resources Advising:

Provides disability management advice, strategies, interventions, and confidential counseling for the retention and graduation of students with disabilities. Determines eligibility and disability accommodations through a detailed, interactive, student-centered process in accordance with applicable guidelines, regulations and laws. Interprets complex diagnostic assessment results, neurological reports, other inputs and CSU policy to verify specific disabilities based on functional limitations. Provides in-depth advising about: eligibility; student understanding of the relationship between their functional limitations, barriers, authorized accommodations, self-advocacy, and learning outcomes; and retention strategies. Refers on or off campus for further or supplemental assessment. Develops, implements, monitors, intervenes and modifies individualized student action plans. Evaluates progress of each student through various methods. Serves as SDR liaison and advocate for students on academic affairs, Financial Aid, Housing, Department of Rehabilitation, etc. Addresses complaints and conflicts regarding equal access to the educational process; recommends and facilitates solutions to problems for which campus precedents may not exist. Engages in frequent to constant interaction with students, parents, faculty and staff to perform student advising and related support functions.

Refers students for Alternate Media and Assistive Technology training, Test Center use, and off campus resources, and advises students about interviewing prospective disability specialists. In conjunction with others: develops and provides retention services for students, including remote learners, Veterans, Extended Education and International students, while emphasizing self-determination, wellness and full participation in the learning process. Upholds professional standards, policies, CSU mandates, executive orders, and procedures to serve all CSUMB students.

Maintains files on each student in a highly confidential manner; frequently uses SDR’s student file system, databases and web-based information. Compiles and analyzes data to prepare reports and other outputs on all aspects of the support services area, including division and system-wide reporting.

  1. Compliance, Collaboration, Outreach and Presentations:

Uses professional knowledge and best practices as a liaison to the faculty and programs, for and with students who are registered with SDR, to ensure effective consideration and delivery of accommodations. Models Universal Design for learning by ensuring all SDR materials and communications are accessible. Coordinates physical access with Facilities Management, housing and academic departments. Develops, coordinates, and implements collaborative, co-curricular activities for students with disabilities designed to enhance and support wellness and academic success. Conducts workshops to increase participant awareness, knowledge and skills on the necessity and responsibility of the university and campus partners to facilitate access under relevant disability laws and mandates while maintaining academic standards.  Supports campus-wide events. Serves on committees and on the Health and Wellness Services team.

Other Functions:

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

One year working with students with disabilities in higher education is preferred.

Demonstrated familiarity with solving problems related to requirements of the ADAAA, Rehabilitation Act and other disability-related policies as applied to higher education. Advanced skill: providing cross-cultural disability management advising with context for intersectionality and disability justice; understanding compensatory learning strategies/techniques; and learning skills instruction. Knowledge and experience implementing best practices to improve retention and graduation rates of under-represented, first generation, and diverse college students with disabilities. Demonstrated ability to: independently obtain, compile, analyze, interpret and evaluate information and medical data; effectively convey ideas, concepts and recommendations in clear, concise reports and presentation formats; lead and serve on teams; adapt and be flexible to change in the work environment; provide outstanding customer service. Experience with extensive engagement with students, parents, faculty and staff to perform student advising and related support functions.

Knowledge of assistive technology used in higher education; bilingual (speaking/writing); thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and packages. Technical fluency with: Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite; Google mail, Drive, and calendar programs. A master’s degree in Disability Services in Higher Education, Social Sciences, Social Work, Student Development, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a directly related field.

  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 16, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks.  Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
