Reporting to the President, the Vice President for University Advancement provides vision, inspiration, leadership, planning, and management for University Advancement in support of the institutional mission and priorities articulated in the University's strategic and master plan. The Vice President has central responsibility for the University’s Advancement Division, coordinating fundraising and alumni relations initiatives with administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners to make successful and lasting contributions to institutional success in support of the university's academic mission and student focus. The incumbent’s primary purpose is to obtain financial, community, alumni, and public support for the University and ensure strategies are effectively implemented for the benefit of the University as a whole. Responsibilities extend to all areas of fundraising and capital development and alumni relations. Duties also include, but are not limited to, identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and securing potential donors and donors. This includes organizing and providing effective communication to donors and potential donors; stewarding patrons and other individual prospects, sponsors and donors; coordinating gift processing; overseeing fundraising events; and recruiting, training and motivating volunteers for the University’s fund-raising projects. The Vice President provides leadership for the university’s advancement team, directing the activities of development directors in support of the annual, major, and capital campaigns, planned giving, and alumni relations to ensure accountability for these programs based on best practices for peer and aspirational institutions. The Vice President is expected to work collaboratively with the President and Cabinet to achieve the University’s annual fundraising goals. This includes taking a team approach to developing fundraising strategies, setting fundraising goals, and establishing avenues for engagement with faculty, deans, and other members of the campus community towards achieving those goals. Lastly, the Vice President is expected to understand and operate effectively in an environment that is strong focused on student success and which celebrates excellence, collegiality and shared governance.

The Vice President actively engages with and manages a personal portfolio of individual and institutional prospects, including personal cultivation, solicitation, closing of gifts, and stewardship. The Vice President is active in the community which may include, but is not limited to, participating on the boards of community and other not-for-profit organizations to ensure long-term relationships between the University and donors are developed and maintained. The Vice President actively partners with the President in advancement activities, managing engagement at the highest level with prospects to build volunteer and philanthropic leadership for the institution, and supporting Board members and other leadership of volunteers in their choreographed fundraising activities. The Vice President also collaborates with colleagues in the California State University system in support of local and system-wide advancement endeavors.

In addition, the Vice President assures that alumni relations programs and activities foster deep and broad engagement with and pride in their alma mater, and in turn supporting and growing alumni donor participation.

As a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Vice President participates in strategic planning, policy formulation, budgetary decisions and problem-solving, and offers advice and counsel on the implications of institutional decisions, while also working closely with the Foundation and Alumni advisory board, deans and faculty. As Executive Director of the CSUMB Foundation Board of Directors, which has oversight responsibility for the university’s endowment, the Vice President establishes mechanisms for receipt and stewardship of gifts to the university.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Major Duties: The Vice President works to strengthen annual philanthropic fundraising efforts by managing and building relationships with current and prospective donors, corporations, and foundations to develop, execute, and evaluate a fundraising plan, which includes comprehensive and capital campaigns, major gifts, leadership annual giving, direct response annual giving, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving and alumni relations, supported by data management, research and advancement services. Incumbent is expected to be a proactive and strategic fundraiser committed to the mission and vision of the university and to collaboratively partner with the President in her advancement activities.

The incumbent engages with and supports members of the Foundation and Alumni advisory board, the Deans, and other University leaders to solicit gifts from established and prospective donors; personally cultivates, solicits, closes gifts and provides ongoing stewardship; assures programs of alumni relations effectively foster deep and broad engagement; and employs best practices and adherence to policy and standards in managing and leading Advancement team. Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Functional Oversight/Management: Oversees the effective management of all activities and programs relating to development, which includes fundraising and capital development, communications, and alumni relations. Devises, proposes and implements fundraising strategies. Provides strategic and consistent communications with existing donors and friends for the university, and creates a systematic approach to broadening the base of donors and friends for the university. Develops and implements best practices for university fundraising, particularly for alumni, major gifts and planned giving programs. Serves as a member of the President’s executive team, and serves on university committees and task forces as appropriate.
  2. Strategic Planning: As a strategic partner, recommends, creates, and implements long and short term strategic plan goals and operational plans for Advancement. Ensures the department’s goals align with and support the overall academic mission of the University. Motivates and encourages commitment to achievement of strategic plans and effectively communicates the strategic initiatives with the campus community, including the leadership time, faculty, staff and students.
  3. University/Community Partnership: As a member of the campus community, ensures a community focused strategy to support the university’s mission. Recognizes the importance of collective strength, knowledge, and information. Builds effective strategic alliances internally and externally to advance development initiatives. Initiates and develops strong working relationships with community. Demonstrates commitment to diversity. Takes the necessary measures to solicit and influence internal and external support.
  4. Leadership/Management: Builds competence in others through effective coaching, performance management and mentoring. Provides clear direction. Supports and moves new initiatives forward. Demonstrates commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. Understands the university’s mission, vision, funding, and strategic plan how the department/division work activities and goals support that mission. Identifies current and future challenges and proposes effective solutions. Determines, effectively allocates, and coordinates resources for the benefit of the university, and provides clear direction and communication to both internal and external community members.

Knowledge and ability to use analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills and to work creatively and independently. Comprehensive financial background with technical skills in budgetary management, and financial and strategic planning. Executive level leadership and organizational development experience with the ability to direct and supervise others, measure the performance of people, teams, and organizations, and assess performance and progress with a focus on team building within an environment that promotes superior customer service. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to set appropriate priorities to effect timely completion of numerous concurrent tasks within defined resource limitations.  Ability to write reports, specifications, policies, and procedures covering a wide range of operational responsibilities under defined duties. Ability to analyze situations and take corrective action.  Ability to maintain effective working relationships within a diverse environment of administration, faculty, students, and external contacts, including the Office of the Chancellor of the California State University, state and county government, the various municipal/district boards and officials in the university service area, and others whose interests often overlap those of the campus. Ability to grow financial resources and foster a collaborative long range budgeting process for resource allocation. Working knowledge of Information Management Systems, such as PeopleSoft Finance and PeopleSoft Human Resources, or other Enterprise Resource Planning application. Ability to work collaboratively with peers to identify public/private fiscal resources to accomplish campus goals.


A bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, plus ten years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the advancement field, including a minimum of five years leading and/or supervising the work of others, is required. Master’s degree in related field and work experience in an academic setting, ideally within higher education and at a public university, is strongly preferred. The incumbent must also possess successful experience with community engagement and external fundraising; and the ability to provide leadership in the use of technology and information systems to support all related development activities, including donor research and administration. The incumbent should possess familiarity with new technologies, electronic communication, social networking vehicles, and other technological innovations that can streamline and enhance the effectiveness of the Advancement process. Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite required. Raiser’s Edge experience highly preferred.

The incumbent must have a broad background in fundraising including demonstrated success, and a solid record of accomplishments, in personal solicitation of major gifts and planned gifts, planning and implementing fundraising programs, board development, campaign planning and management, annual giving, grants development and individual, corporate and foundation gifts. The incumbent must also have a demonstrated track record in meeting and exceeding measurable goals; as well as a commitment to, and experience with understanding the role of a strong alumni relations program as an integral part of Advancement. A background and understanding of the importance of strategic planning and a high level of energy and the capacity to partner effectively with the President and University leaders to advance university priorities is required.

The incumbent must have experience building and managing an effective team dedicated to organizational goals and high performance. The incumbent must adhere to principles of transparency in decision-making and management; exhibit a commitment to diversity and a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse university/campus environment. The incumbent must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple highly visible projects and competing priorities simultaneously; demonstrate integrity and sound judgment in performing duties; possess the ability to supervise the work of staff and recommend appropriate personnel actions; be able to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed. The candidate must demonstrate strong communication skills, both oral and written, patience and the ability to listen effectively to various constituents and interests. The incumbent must also possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships, partnerships, and coalitions amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, alumni, donors and other internal and external university and community stakeholders. The incumbent must possess excellent judgment regarding matters of policy and practice, a clear understanding of the administration's goals and objectives and a strong understanding of confidentiality.

This is a full time in person position. Duties will primarily take place in an office setting however, additional duties may be performed in various locations on the campus and throughout the local community, including working both indoors and outdoors to support and participate in university activities and events. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. This position will require occasional travel, by automobile or airplane, and overnight stay to travel to trainings and meetings off campus.

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.
