PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of tjeVice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and the day-to-day guidance of the Director of the Otter Cross Cultural Center (OC3), this role is pivotal in fostering an inclusive, dynamic resource environment for diverse student populations. This position is dedicated to providing strategic guidance, comprehensive training, and robust support to enable students and their supporters to access information about CSUMB programs, guidelines and policies, the healthy exchange of ideas, the development of self-advocacy skills, and to build a supportive community. This role is instrumental in delivering information and strategic direction to enhance the enrollment, educational success, retention, and graduation rates of diverse students. This role will assist in the daily administration of the three Affinity Centers –Latinx Student Success Center (el Centro), Helen Rucker Center for Black Excellence (HRCBE), Pride Rainbow Raft Student Success Center (Rainbow Raft Center), and future centers. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for the implementation, evaluation, and assessment of programs, events, resources, and services that center diversity, equity, and inclusion; supervise student staff, and provide guidance and support; provide leadership development for staff and affiliated student organizations; work with the Director to organize the Center’s budgets and develop annual plans assuring they are connected to resources; integrate academic success and identity initiatives; integrate outreach and recruitment efforts; and lead special projects as assigned. This role is also tasked with identifying and researching opportunities that provide background information for resource development for the VP. Lastly, the Program Coordinator will remain current on trends and best practices for retaining, graduating, and supporting students from historically marginalized identities.

The position also involves providing comprehensive advising and advocacy for the HRC. This includes designing, updating, and implementing campus educational programs and services, forging and maintaining partnerships with both on- and off-campus resources, and developing and executing workshops, cultural and educational events that center the Black/African diaspora experience. This position will work with the HRCBE to holistically enrich, support, and advocate for faculty, staff, and students through Black centered research, culturally affirming educational initiatives, and services aimed at improving the collegiate experience and educational outcomes of Black/African diaspora students, faculty and staff members. By investing in the Black/African diaspora community, the HRC enhances the academic, cultural and social development of the entire Otter community/raft.

The Affinity Centers are pivotal in promoting student engagement, academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and leadership opportunities within an inclusive and supportive environment. The Affinity Centers provide personalized advising, leadership development, student organization support, outreach, and intercultural programming, all within an environment that fosters appreciation, respect, and inclusion of social differences. The Center’s co-curricular programs encourage open dialogue and expression, integral to developing cross-cultural competence and fostering student leadership, development, and success. The Affinity Centers build relationships and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works with the Director and the Affinity Center Leads to establish short and long-term goals and objectives. The Vice President, AVP and Director of OC3 works to assure priorities are set and the VP assigns tasks and make sure goals are being implemented. Develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive cross-cultural and intersectional programming model for the HRC designed to engage both small niche groups and large sections of the student body to assure academic, social, career and academic success strategies assisting students toward graduation. This includes, but is not limited to assisting in the development, planning, and implementation of Affinity Center’s signature events like: All Black Gala, Black History Month, Hispanic Serving Institution Week, Werk Witch Drag Show, LGBTQ+ Community Training (formerly Safe Zone), and other signature programs. Assist in program evaluation, assessment, and grant writing. Including annual programming and service reports, outcomes assessments, and evaluation of tools and data. Creates and conducts assessments of student services and programs with the goals of assisting Black/African diaspora student success, enriching their campus experience and enhancing their academic success. Develop programs, prepare contracts, communicate with speakers and performers, schedule venues and audio/visual equipment, prepare graphics requests, and develop publicity strategies for events. Provide overall leadership in the daily administration of the HRCBE. Attend daytime, evening, and weekend events to ensure successful implementation of programs. Provide informal advising and direct assistance to culturally focused student organizations affiliated with the HRC.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, community members, and students across campus to develop programs, events, and services that bridge in-class and out-of-class learning experiences. Develop working relationships with social justice, cultural, and gender/sexuality-focused community organizations. Serve as a point of contact for resources and relationships with the Affinity Centers and other campus offices. Maintain and continue to develop professional campus relationships to improve outcomes related to the inclusion, retention, and graduation of students from diverse backgrounds. Participate in the cultural center, OSU, and University meetings as needed. Provide management and guidance for social media, marketing, and promotions for all Affinity Centers.
  • Provide outreach, general advising/advocacy, mentoring and support to the Affinity Centers.   Develop and implement culturally relevant initiatives to support retention and academic success of HRC students. Facilitate diversity, equity, and anti-oppression professional development for the centers and University departments, offices, and student organizations as needed. Assist in the development and implementation of recruitment, outreach, awareness, and strategic plans to advance the mission of CSUMB.
  • Works with the Director to manage the budget and plan proactively for infrastructure capacity and technology changes. In consultation with the Director, develops, manages, and monitors the complex annual operating budget of the HRCBE. In consultation with the Director, leads staff in the formulation of the department’s mission, vision, strategic plan, goals, objectives, and learning outcomes ensuring conceptual compatibility with the broader missions and strategic plans of the Division and the University. Apply applicable CSU, CSUMB, OSU, and Student Life operating policies and procedures throughout the planning and execution of programs. Present at campus meetings as needed creating meeting minutes to ensure accountability for both the position as well as institutional change.  Develop surveys and other instruments to measure student outcomes and other aspects of program effectiveness.

  2. Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service to cultivate welcoming spaces.
  3. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Education or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. One year of direct experience in event management, event coordination, or event planning. 

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Technical fluency with Banner, Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Knowledge of behavioral, emotional, social, academic trajectory of at-risk and diverse students and familiarity with the Project Rebound program and the CSUMB campus is preferred. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts. Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.

Experience to be fully functional in all technical aspects of work assignments. Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the University infrastructure, policies and procedures. Thorough mastery of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and editing. Expertise in using office software packages, technology, and systems.

Previous experience working with and supporting Black/African Diaspora, LGBTQ+, Latiné, and other communities of color or diverse student groups. Cultural competency and awareness of the concerns, pressures, and inequities of women, people of color, undocumented communities, queer and gender-fluid communities, and other marginalized student groups. Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity and inclusion, and of the intersections of identities including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religious, ability, and class background. Experience in cultures other than their own. Successful practices in retaining and graduating students from historically marginalized identities. Current trends in higher education. Delivering training to students and professionals. Knowledge of practices and procedures related to student activities and programming. Knowledge of and commitment to the principles of student development, higher education, identity development, social justice, intersectionality, inclusion, and equity.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
