Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of New Student Orientation and Family Programs, the New Student and Family Program Coordinator plays a pivotal role in facilitating a smooth transition for new students and their families to California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). This position provides comprehensive, student-centered support by assisting with the design and implementation of programs and initiatives that align with enrollment goals, foster student success, and engage parents and families. Key responsibilities include assisting in the development and maintenance of parent and family orientation programs, advising newly admitted students and families on critical transition information, and highlighting on-campus resources and engagement opportunities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Apply knowledge of university practices and procedures to advise newly admitted students and their families, assisting them with essential enrollment processes and supporting their personal transitions into the university.
- Utilize interviewing and other effective assessment techniques to evaluate student and family needs, identify challenges, obstacles, and barriers during their transition and recommend tailored solutions.
- Apply knowledge, judgment, and initiative to address sensitive or complex situations, adapting program procedures as necessary.
- Advocate for students and families by providing support, guidance, and referrals to campus resources.
- Guide students and families in academic, financial aid, and engagement matters, connecting them with appropriate resources to support their onboarding success.
- Assist in creating and coordinating orientation programs for parents and families of first-year and transfer students, collaborating with campus partners to create meaningful and inclusive experiences.
- Facilitate transitional programming during in-person and online orientations, move-in days, yield events, and other key university activities.
- Provide lead work direction and training to student staff, including student parent liaisons and orientation leaders, to effectively support student and family orientation and engagement efforts.
- Utilize assessment data and feedback to continuously refine and improve orientation content, delivery, and overall effectiveness.
- Maintain detailed records, reports, and documentation to support program evaluation and decision-making.
- Create and maintain communication materials, including but not limited to newsletters, handbooks, webinars, and the Campus ESP parent portal, to ensure students and families are well-informed throughout the admissions process and their transition to the university.
- Maintain and update the parent and family website, ensuring it reflects current outreach, marketing efforts, and relevant information to support the transition and success of students.
- Coordinate and track the development and timeline of communication materials for students and families sent out through enrollment management CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system.
- Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate speakers, workshop presenters, panelists, and other contributors for family orientation and engagement programs.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of a Family Advisory Board by recruiting and supporting members to serve as advocates for students and partners in initiatives that facilitate the successful transition of first-year students.
- Maintain the front office student assistant operations, ensuring efficient handling of inquiries, orientation registration, and scheduling.
- Support the recruitment and training of student assistants, fostering a supportive and professional environment.
- Provide assistance to ensure front office coverage, ensuring students are served during normal business hours, including lunches and breaks.
- Collaborate with academic units, advising centers, and student affairs departments to align orientation with institutional goals and learning outcomes.
- Establish and maintain close working relationships with other campus offices and departments both in-person and via electronic communication to coordinate inclusive orientation programs.
- Provide thoughtful and dedicated support for other CSUSB transition programming and/or campus-wide events and initiatives as directed.
- Work with academic units, advising centers, and university divisions (Student Affairs, Information Technology, Administration and Finance, and Advancement) to intentionally connect university strategic plans and learning outcomes with orientation program goals and objectives.
- May work some late evenings and early weekends during events.
- Other classification related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
- Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
- General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
- Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
- Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree highly preferred from an accredited university.
- A minimum of three years of relevant post-bachelors experience with first year experience / transition program development and advising student staff preferred.
- An understanding of student development and transition theory.
- Experience with outcomes assessment and analysis is preferred
- Experience with budget and resource allocation is preferred.
- Knowledge of working at a public institution.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, students, faculty, parents, and guests.
- Ability to translate student development, leadership theory, and research into practice.
- Ability to advise student groups and facilitate group development.
- Ability to plan and implement programs linked to student learning outcomes.
- Experience maintaining and tracking administrative paperwork.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student and staff population.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of contract development, negotiations and execution.
- Event planning skills including designing, marketing, implementing, and assessing impact.
- Ability to work autonomously and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions.
Compensation and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083 per month
Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Campus Security Authority
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
