JOB SUMMARY
Tutors support student learning in the classroom by meeting with students in an individual or group tutoring format to explain and clarify course lectures, materials, and concepts. Tutors also provide tips and insights into basic study skills to help navigate the subject and/or course. The position also requires employees to have excellent listening and communication skills to assess and understand various student learning styles to meet the needs of the students and to support the lessons taught by the course instructors.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES
- Provide individual and/or group tutoring
- Assess the tutee’s knowledge and develop a tutoring plan
- Share good, fundamental study skills habits and techniques
- Track the tutee’s academic progress
- Foster a positive and supportive learning environment
- Participate in the mandatory training workshop and any ongoing training sessions and professional development
- Assist with tutee attendance data
- Maintain confidentiality
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must currently be enrolled as a student at CSUSB
- Have completed courses with a grade of B or better in order to tutor any desired courses
- Must have excellent communication skills to be able to explain concepts and materials clearly and effectively
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Have completed one full semester at CSUSB (applies to Freshmen with exceptions for Transfer students)
- Demonstrate knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject matter
- Proficiency with computer hardware and software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous college level tutoring experience is helpful, but not required
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
