Under the general direction of the President, the Director is responsible for directing The Bright Futures Education Partnership as a catalyst for regional partners to work together, across sectors, and along the social and educational continuum to drive better results in education, for every child from cradle to career. The Director provides leadership and facilitates the achievement of the coalition's goals to ensure that every child is prepared for school, supported inside and outside of school, succeeds in school, enrolls in some form of postsecondary education, graduates, and enters a career.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Articulates clear and measurable, shared community goals to improve education outcomes, cradle to career, with a priority focus on closing racial and ethnic disparity gaps.  Tracks and reports collective progress against goals.
  2. Recruits and engages community partners, including leaders in education, business, faith, nonprofit, philanthropic, and civic sectors, to support The Bright Futures Partnership. Serves as a key thought leader and change champion. Coordinates with co-conveners -- the Monterey County Children's Council (MCCC) and the business community to ensure cohesion and collaboration. Provides advice and counsel to campus and community partners.  Supports an autonomous governance structure that includes key local executives from across sectors.  Encourages practitioners in the field to align their work to the goals of The Bright Futures Partnership when there may not be a clear self-interest in doing so beyond improving long-term outcomes for children and the community.
  3. Provides leadership to ensure that the mission and core values of The Bright Futures Partnership are put into practice. Establishes current and long-range goals, objectives, strategies and measures in collaboration with regional partners. Works with the President and the Provost to achieve alignment and coordination of campus initiatives to improve community outcomes.
  4. Collaborates effectively with other collective impact and racial/ethnic equity change initiatives to support, align and integrate their work into The Bright Futures Partnership and shared outcomes. 
  5. Establishes and maintains an effective system of communication throughout the community in order to promote a positive image of The Bright Futures Partnership and CSUMB.  Serves as the point of contact for the networks of cradle to career partners, such as, the California Cradle to Career Coalition, the national StriveTogether network and many other organizations fostering education success for every child, especially children and youth of color. 
  6. Develops, recommends, and implements action plans related to Advocacy, Funding, and Communications Alignment and various change projects and initiatives.  Facilitates the work of The Bright Futures Partnership and its committees.  Designs and administers a comprehensive assessment plan to evaluate the impact of programs and services and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to improve results.
  7. Recommends a sound financial structure for The Bright Futures Partnership and assists with securing adequate resources to effectively achieve stated goals.  Develops a budget plan and manages financial resources allocated by the campus to support The Partnership.  Seeks external funding, including grants that support the work of the cradle to career partnership.
  8. Manages the daily operation of The Bright Futures Partnership by outlining clear work plans with staff and consultants that directly align work to desired outcomes.  Oversees the collection, analysis, and reporting of data. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional and support staff. 

Other Functions:

  1. Represents CSUMB and The Bright Futures Partnership at critical national convenings pertaining to cradle to career partnerships and improved outcomes.
  2. Prepares key partnership spokespeople for speaking engagements, including the development of materials and talking points.
  3. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge and demonstrated success in organizational development and strategic planning. Knowledge of the literature and best practices in cradle to career partnerships, educational and social policy and trends.  Thorough knowledge of: principles, problems, and methods of administration in a public higher education institution, including organization, personnel, and fiscal management; techniques used for employee recruitment, selection, training, supervision, performance management, engagement and development; statistical and research methods.

Skills: leadership, change management, grant writing and oversight, project management, communication, facilitation of groups to successfully achieve outcomes, presentation skills, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.

Ability to: effectively engage diverse organizations in a collaborative partnership; identify opportunities, set the vision and provide strong leadership in the design, development and implementation of assigned programs, projects, policies and procedures; provide sound recommendations; rapidly become familiar with CSUMB's programs, services, policies and procedures; work and manage in a manner that is highly collaborative and supportive; select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff; handle and coordinate multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines; develop and administer budgets; oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of data using state-of-the art information management systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse, academic environment and the regional communities served by the University.


A Master's degree in education, public policy, non-profit/governmental management or a related field AND a minimum of seven years experience in increasingly responsible management positions. Experience should include: working with community and educational leaders, grant writing and oversight, project management, personnel supervision, budget development and administration.


  • A record of success in developing strategic partnerships, building and maintaining positive relationships and working effectively with a wide array of partners that play different and divergent roles in organizations and communities
  • Knowledge of the literature and best practices in collective impact methodologies, cradle to career partnerships, educational and social policy, social justice issues and related trends
  • A record of success in serving as a community spokesperson on issues of social justice, systemic racial and ethnic gaps, and strategies to support the closing of equity gaps
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas and solutions
  • Ability to effectively champion and facilitate change
  • Excellent strategic planning and organizational skills; demonstrated success in managing major initiatives from development to implementation and measurement
  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in a diverse working environment and fostering a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Experience working in or with educational systems (P-12, Community College, University or job training)
  • Experience with Monterey County or other diverse public education systems
  • Bi-cultural and bi-literate in Spanish and English
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision
  • Proficient in the use of relevant information management systems and office software programs, such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet browsers, Google (email and calendar) or equivalent.

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks.  Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations. 

There are components of this job which are deemed essential on campus.  This position will primarily work on the main campus, with occasional work from home. This position requires working on campus with students.  The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority.
