PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Tutoring Services, the Languages and Peer Coaching Coordinator provides CSUMB students with tutorial services and conversation groups for the language courses taught at CSUMB (Spanish, Japanese, and American Sign Language) and one to one sessions and workshops in peer coaching across disciplines, and assists in interdisciplinary tutorial program development and expansion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Tutor hiring, training, and evaluation.  In collaboration with the Director, Learning Center Coordinators, faculty and other staff, recruits qualified tutors and peer coaches, and hires, trains and evaluates tutors to support identified language courses across the disciplines, in compliance with the unit 11 CBA. Collaborates with CLC staff in coordinating, developing and facilitating tutor training.  Conducts biweekly tutor and peer coach training.  Plans and coordinates calendar of services. Establishes schedules for tutors and peer coaches, monitoring expenses to stay within budget allocations; makes budget requests as needed. Ensures that levels of staffing are consistent with student demand, monitors usage to adjust schedules as needed, ensuring optimal use of available tutor hours.
  2. Program planning and development: Applies expertise in specialty and understanding of institutional needs based on changes to curriculum and student population as well as data analysis to make recommendations for program development, focused on increasing collaboration with the World Languages Department and units on campus benefitting from peer coaching.  Works in collaboration with Director and Learning Center Coordinators to plan and implement program changes.  Keeps abreast of changing research and practice in tutoring and peer coaching and introduces and evaluates promising practices, through interaction with national professional networks, including attending and participating in conferences and seminars that enhance the Learning Center. Develops, plans, and staffs peer coaching workshops, language conversation groups, and other relevant programming across campus.
  3. Interaction with faculty and other campus constituents: Promotes close faculty-tutor/peer coach collaboration.  Promotes CLC through outreach efforts.  Assists in the writing/documentation of proposals and content for use in a diverse environment. Communicates effectively with administrators.
  4. Tutor Guidance and Administration: facilitates tutors in best practices to support individual and small group tutoring sessions in the language acquisition process: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Assists coaches in developing strategies that help fellow students remain motivated and productive.  Provides opportunities for peer tutors and coaches to develop content and materials, marketing to appropriate students.

Other Functions:

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a college tutoring center, peer-to-peer mentoring models, and second language acquisition. General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.  General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior. 

Skills:  Proficient in the use of personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets and database software, and Google mail, slides, and calendaring programs.

Ability to: Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvement; obtain factual and interpretative information through interview; reason logically, collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSUMB administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of the campus to which assigned.  

Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas. Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports as part of the project evaluation processes.  Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and adhere to deadlines.  Ability to contribute to a team effort to accomplish program goals and objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  Possession of this knowledge and ability is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Education:  Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job- related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in a job-related field. Advanced skill speaking, writing, and/or teaching Spanish, Japanese, or American Sign Language. Two years of professional experience in areas related to college tutoring, advising and/or retention. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time and requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.  Some evening and weekend hours may be required
