Under the general direction of the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the daily direction of the Chair for the Music and Performing Arts (MPA) Department, the Performing Arts Technician provides technical support for recording technology courses, classroom audio and video equipment and materials, recording sessions, performances and events. The Performing Arts Technician also schedules use of lab and studio space, supervises recording sessions, and ensures responsible use of equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provides technical support for Instruction and Academic Events:
- Provides pre-planning technical needs for academic events.
- Equipment set-up for events: tests, maintains, and troubleshoots hardware (including SSL Matrix, rack-mounted gear, microphones, cables, and stands). Tests, maintains, and troubleshoots theatrical lights and lighting console, sound console, speakers, video projector, and media playback software.
- Coordinates the hiring of qualified technicians and provide necessary assistance when problems not resolvable by the Technician or covered by a warranty.
- Advises faculty and staff in purchasing new and replacement hardware, software, and other necessary items.
- Oversees audio visual and cable management and implementation.
- Supports sound and lighting design and needs.
- Assists with academic events requiring staging, lighting, photography and some post production.
- Ensures spaces (including studios, tracking spaces, storage areas, and annex) are organized and clean.
- Schedules performances throughout the semester, ensuring room and staff availability.
- Monitors the usage of resources by students.
Building and Performance Scheduling and Supervision:
- Manages the scheduling of recording sessions in performance spaces, labs, and studios
- Supervises students during rehearsals, recording sessions, and lab work.
- Manages the rental of equipment and gear to faculty, staff, and students. Ensures safe return of equipment at the end of the semester. Clean, maintain, and repair equipment for rental following semester. Maintains inventory database of equipment and schedule of end of life.
Provides technical support for stage performance and classroom audio and visual technology:
- Tests, maintains, and troubleshoots performance and classroom equipment (including CD players, cassette players, LP players, receivers, cables, projectors, and speakers)
- Trains faculty to use technology through in-person instruction and/or prepared materials
- Assists faculty in preparing audio and video materials for instructional purposes.
- Provides technical assistance for class and performances, including live sound reinforcement and lighting. Collaborates with faculty to understand and implement their needs and ideas.
- Sets up appropriate gear in coordination with faculty and student needs.
- Guides, trains and schedules student assistants to set up and use the equipment for academic events.
- IT to ensure that software and computing needs are addressed and stay up to date on evolving recording technology in order to implement industry standard equipment and practices.
- Facilities to ensure that the infrastructural needs for CAHSS events are met.
- Department support staff to coordinate the hiring of special event performers for academic events.
- The Dean’s office on social media platforms for current students and alumni
- The Network department in order to implement new gear and technology over campus network in collaboration with OSU, World Theater, and more.
- Records, mixes, masters, and distributes performances, if requested.
- Coordinates with outside performers, artists, presenters, and guest speakers in order to implement their needs for guest/master class performances.
- Takes down all equipment and clean the room so that it is ready for classes or more performances.
- Contributes to special projects that benefit MPA such as soundproofing and acoustical treatment of studios and rehearsal rooms, assessing alternative lighting options, and exploring speaker options.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and problems in multiple production specialties. Thorough and in-depth knowledge of the technical aspects of construction, implementation, and operation of staging materials and effects in the various production specialties, including the ability to work with drawings and plots to assist in their execution. Comprehensive knowledge of safety measures and hazards related to theatre productions. Working knowledge of directing and stage management, including the ability to manage staging needs for productions requiring numerous costume and set changes and the ability to manage and coordinate the use of multiple facilities. Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty. Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty. Thorough knowledge of basic electrical theory and usage related to audio and lighting effects and working knowledge of lighting, sound and stage effect techniques, including the ability to improvise lighting, sound, stage property, and other stage effects.
Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals at all levels within the organization.
Ability to: work with faculty and provide training and supervision to students involved in productions; support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to production specialty; independently manage production support projects and productions by breaking segments into working units that coincide with production needs; work on more complex projects/designs and to work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs; use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty; plan the layout and use of work areas.
Entry to the first level within this classification requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.
Experience supporting audio and visual technology as well as audio and recording productions. Skilled in basic testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of classroom equipment, recording technology hardware and software. Ability to perform the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
Five or more years of experience working in a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in sound/audio production. Fluency with Pro-Tools professional recording software versions 10-12; a working knowledge of Finale and/or Sibelius scoring and composition software; Reason and Audacity.
Technically proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); Oracle-PeopleSoft or equivalent student, HR and Financial information systems; 25Live scheduling platform; projection and power point operation, Zoom webinar, reporting tools; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

- This position requires evening and weekend work.
May include working in the presence of loud noise, vibration, bright lights, dark and/or confined spaces. Position requires full range of motion and variety of movements necessary to perform labor, including lifting and moving moderate sized equipment up to 50 pounds. Must have the ability to hear well enough to identify auditory difficulties. Includes an office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
There are components of this job which are deemed essential on campus. This position will primarily work on the main campus, with occasional work from home.
